A Novel Set in the World of Animal Magica
The Wandering Dragon Café
A cozy fantasy about grief, healing, baby dragons, and finding home in the most unexpected places.
Six months after becoming the hero of the Great Shade War, Thirza Von Baer is adrift, haunted by the loss of her beloved dragon companion, Volcarina, and struggling to find her place in a world no longer at war.
But when she inherits an enchanted, temperamental cottage from a mysterious wizard, she sees her chance to build something meaningful — a sanctuary for orphaned baby dragons and a cozy haven for those seeking comfort: a dragon café.
The cottage, however, has other ideas.
This sentient, whimsical house is as moody as it is magical, with a penchant for shifting rooms, hiding objects, and even sprouting legs to run away when displeased. Despite its antics, Thirza is determined to tame it, enlisting the help of Simeon, a handsome, charming, overly cheerful wizard with a knack for magic and mischief.
Together, Thirza and her friends wrangle the wandering cottage, care for a growing brood of playful drakelings, and attempt to turn Thirza's vision into reality. But as the café begins to thrive, a shadowy force linked to her past emerges, forcing her to confront the grief and guilt she's carried since Volcarina's death.
This is a story about finding home — not just in a place, but in the people and creatures you love. With its cozy atmosphere, magical whimsy, a touch of romance, and a heroine who is as tough as she is tender, The Wandering Dragon Café is a warm reminder that even the most broken things can be made whole again, one cup of tea at a time.
Meet the Cast
A band of misfits brought together by dragons, destiny, and really good pastries.
Thirza Von Baer
Dragon Knight · Café Founder
A battle-weary half-elf warrior learning that building a home takes more courage than any battlefield. Serious, pragmatic, and fiercely protective — but mention baby dragons and watch her eyes light up. Her dry humor and no-nonsense attitude hide a heart still healing from devastating loss.
Crumpet
Baby Drakeling · Thirza's Companion
A tiny, kitten-sized drakeling with creamy gold scales, coral stripes, and the sweetest brown eyes. Crumpet is pure heart — curious, brave, and endlessly eager to make Thirza smile. He tries to be big and fierce despite fitting in the palm of your hand.
Simeon Gwilliams
Wizard · Charming Troublemaker
A flashy half-elf wizard who casts spells by feeding magical ingredients to his fire salamander, Treacle. Simeon's wit and warmth draw everyone in, but underneath the charming grin lies a man quietly grappling with his own hidden wounds and a secret fear he won't speak of.
Winifred "Winnie" Humfrey
Dragon Trainer · Unstoppable Optimist
An enthusiastic young human from the frozen north who has dreamed about dragons her whole life. She's warm, bubbly, and impossibly earnest — and her natural gift with animals makes her the perfect caretaker for a brood of chaotic baby drakelings.
Archibald Winstekker
Baker · Prickly Perfectionist
The cottage's former caretaker — a tall, austere elf who looks like a butler and judges like a food critic. His enchanted pastries taste like whatever your heart craves most. Underneath his icy exterior lies fierce loyalty and a deep grief for the wizard he served for twenty years.
The Enchanted Cottage
Sentient Building · Drama Queen
A beautiful ivy-clad cottage so thoroughly imbued with magic that it has its own moods and opinions. It can rearrange rooms, hide your things, sprout bird-like iron legs and wander off, and hum lullabies when pleased. It doesn't like being told what to do — and it definitely has feelings about dragons.
The Drakelings
Drakelings are miniature, cat-sized dragons — domesticated, endlessly friendly, and capable of causing just as much chaos as any villain.

Pale purple · Always teething
Shadow
Black · Sneaky pouncer
Chitter & Chatter
Blue twins · Inseparable
Meg

The Setting
Set in the Forty-two Isles of Symvalia — a world of magical bonds, walking trees, and a rich tapestry of peoples.
🏝️ Yestersun Isle
A sprawling island of farms, orchards, and idyllic rolling fields. Home to the quaint village of Peckington, where the enchanted cottage settles (when it feels like it). Known for its pastoral lifestyle and chicken farms.
🏘️ Peckington
The quaint village where the cottage dwelled under Wizard Hymellius. Its residents are used to magical weirdness. Neighbours include Doctor Brog (an orc who is, amusingly, not a doctor) and Mayor Penelope Greenhill.
🏙️ Cranberry Town
The largest city on Yestersun — once a quaint farming town turned bustling merchant hub. The cottage wanders here when it's tired of Peckington's small-town pace.
⚓ Port Anjipier
A busy coastal town of whitewashed buildings and merchant stalls. Its port links the central isles, and its fishers specialise in extracting fish essence for humane mock-meat crafting.
Inside the Café
The enchanted cottage is bigger on the inside — and every room has personality.
The Main Room
Tables for two dozen guests, a cozy mezzanine with dragon-motif railings, overstuffed cushions, bookshelves, and a crackling fireplace. This is where drakelings roam and pastries vanish.
The Kitchen
Spacious and bright, with warm wooden countertops, copper pots hanging from the ceiling, and a hearth large enough to roast a whole deer — or warm rocks for dragon hatchlings.
Dragon Nesting Room
A warm, circular stone chamber with a sunken floor and alcoves at various heights for drakelings to nest in. A large round window floods it with sunlight.
The Conservatory
Glass walls and ceiling illuminate a jungle of impossible plants. Purple vines with bell-shaped flowers climb the walls, and a miniature orange tree grows from a sparkling fountain. Hymellius called it the Room of Impossible Gardens.
The Courtyard
An open-air garden enclosed by the cottage itself. Fruit trees provide shade, and artfully arranged boulders give dragons the perfect spots to sun themselves.
