A Brief History
Trace the history of the Forty-two Isles from the Early Age to the present-day Age of Clarity.
The Forty-two Isles have weathered ages of wonder, war, and transformation. What follows is a brief chronicle of the major eras that shaped Symvalia into the world it is today.
The Early Age
In the beginning there was Arialma — the living magic of the world itself. From Arialma’s power, the land, sea, and sky were shaped. The first peoples emerged and, in time, discovered they could form bonds with the creatures around them. These earliest Magica Bonds were spontaneous — born of trust, necessity, and mutual recognition.
The world was wild and largely uncharted. Communities were small. The full extent of the archipelago was unknown.
The Age of Enlightenment
As civilisations grew, so did ambition. Peoples explored new isles, developed schools of magic, and began to understand the deeper mechanics of the Magica Bond. Art, scholarship, and arcane study flourished.
But enlightenment also brought conflict. The era’s defining event was the Winter War — a devastating conflict that engulfed the Northern and Central Isles. The war tested alliances, shattered old power structures, and left scars that would take generations to heal.
The Age of Unity
In the aftermath of the Winter War, the peoples of the Isles forged new pacts. Races that had been isolated began cooperating — humans, elves, dwarves, gnomes, and others built shared cities and trade routes. The Forty-two Isles were formally mapped and named during this period.
It was an era of peace, prosperity, and cultural exchange. Many of the traditions, festivals, and institutions that still exist today were established during the Age of Unity.
The Usurper’s War
Peace does not last forever. A powerful figure — the Usurper — rose to challenge the established order, seeking to seize control of the Isles’ magical resources and consolidate power. The war that followed was brutal and far-reaching, drawing in peoples from every corner of the archipelago.
The Usurper’s War ended in defeat for the would-be tyrant, but it exposed fault lines between the regions that would deepen in the years to come.
The Splintering
In the wake of the Usurper’s War, the fragile unity of the Isles fractured. Regions withdrew into themselves. The Fae Courts closed their borders. Trust between races eroded. Old grudges resurfaced.
The Splintering was not a single event but a slow unravelling — decades of isolationism, broken treaties, and simmering tension that left the world divided and vulnerable.
The Age of Clarity (Present Day)
The current era began with the Great Shade War — a cataclysmic conflict against an encroaching force of dark magic that threatened all life in the Isles. Facing extinction, the fractured peoples were forced to reunite.
The Great Shade War ended, but its aftermath continues to shape the world. The present-day Isles are rebuilding, reconnecting, and rediscovering what was lost during the Splintering. Queen Maeve rules the Central Isles from the great isle of Aishi, working to restore cooperation across the archipelago.
It is a time of cautious hope — and of new stories waiting to be told.
