The Creatures
Discover the three types of companions — animals, magical creatures, and dragons.
The creatures of the Forty-two Isles fall into three broad categories: animals, magical creatures, and dragons. All three kinds can form Magica Bonds — but each brings something different to the partnership.
Animals
Nine of the Wave 1 companions are natural animals — real-world creatures that also inhabit the Forty-two Isles:
Red Fox · Barn Owl · Raven · Koala · Leopard Gecko · Ocelot · Axolotl · Ghost Bat · Vine Snake
Animals don’t possess innate magic of their own. Instead, they draw magical ability entirely from the Magica Bond itself. That makes them no less powerful than a dragon companion — just different. They remind us that magic lives in connection, not only in claws and scales.
Magical Creatures
Nine companions are magical creatures — beings unique to the Isles, blending the familiar with the fantastical:
- Wingcat — A cat with feathery wings, fully capable of flight. Playful, curious, and fiercely loyal.
- Whispermoth — A large, furry, rabbit-like moth with six legs ending in soft paws. Its antennae resemble rabbit ears, and its wings shimmer with bioluminescent patterns.
- Gardenback Turtle — An enchanted garden grows on its shell, tended by nature spirits. Starts small, but can grow to the size of a horse over many years.
- Gridgeon — Miniature griffins! Small enough to perch on a shoulder, they’re commonly used across the Isles for delivering mail.
- Lantern Otter — An otter with tusk-like fangs, glowing eyes, bioluminescent spots, and a lure-like glowing lantern on its head — think angler fish meets river otter.
- Starhound — A hound with blue, black, and silver fur marked with glowing star-like patterns. Can teleport short distances and phase through solid matter.
- Land Shark — A shark with four stumpy legs that breathes air and lives on land. Despite its toothy grin, it acts like a big, lovable dog. Surprisingly cute.
- Winged Toad — A large toad with bat-like wings. Its tongue holds potent magic powers, and it uses flight to travel between forest canopies and wetlands.
- Wolpertinger — A rabbit-like creature sporting fangs, antlers, and small wings. Mischievous and fast, with a talent for getting into trouble.
Dragons
Six companions are dragons — the most storied and diverse category of creature in the Isles:
- Drakeling — Miniature, cat-sized dragons that have been domesticated over centuries. Immensely friendly, they come in every colour imaginable. Not suited for the wild — they’re house pets, lap dragons, and beloved family members.
- Masked Furdragon — Small-to-medium furry dragons with distinctive mask-like facial markings, giving them a raccoon-like appearance. Clever and curious.
- Honey Fae Dragon — Hummingbird-sized dragons with bee-like proportions — black and yellow striped fur, translucent insect wings, a stinger, and little antennae-like horns. They live in communal hives and produce magical honey.
- Thunder-roar Dragon — Powerful storm dragons with purple, blue, and silver scales accented by white or yellow lightning-like markings. Their roar can shake the sky.
- Lake Lindwyrm — Small-to-medium aquatic dragons with big, expressive eyes and beautiful iridescent scales. Elegant frills fan out like a leafy sea dragon’s, and some have hind legs shaped like flippers.
- Clouded Lung Dragon — Long, serpentine eastern-style dragons with no wings. Cloud-like wisps of mist emanate from their bodies, and they fly through pure magic. Their mist can carry magical properties — healing, concealing, or calming.
Dragons are as varied as any other kind of creature. Some are tiny. Some are gentle. Not every dragon is fearsome — but every one is extraordinary.
